Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney announced his support for the Liberal government and said he will attend the upcoming Liberal convention in Ottawa. Carney, who is now the head of transition investing for Brookfield Asset Management and a United Nations special envoy on climate action and finance, believes the party is “on the right track” ahead of the convention, which provides an opportunity for the party to evaluate its policy direction.
Carney’s attendance at the 2021 Liberal convention drew much attention, with some speculating that the former central banker was considering a move into politics. However, in an exclusive interview, Carney told Question Period that he has no plans to deliver a speech at this year’s convention and instead will be listening.
When asked about his thoughts on whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should lead the Liberals into the next general election against Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney said, “I support the government.” He went on to state that he believes the government is on the right track, and that he is attending the convention to provide support to the government and the prime minister.
The convention, which is set for May 4-6, will feature several keynote speakers, including former First Lady of the United States and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, and Liberal Party of Canada President Suzanne Cowan, among others.
