Residents of Entwistle, a hamlet located 80 kilometers west of Edmonton, have been ordered to evacuate due to an approaching grass fire. The fire is located just south of Highway 16, and due to high winds, it’s moving quickly towards Entwistle. The evacuation order, issued by Parkland County, applies to everyone west of Range Road 65, north of Township Road 530 to Township Road 534, including all residents of Entwistle. Alberta Emergency Alert advised people to collect important documents, medication, and enough food and water to be away from home for at least three days.
The critical alert, issued just after 6 p.m. local time on Saturday, instructed evacuees to head west on Highway 16. People can go to Tomahawk Community Center, where further information will be provided to them. The RCMP is also monitoring the situation closely.
Grass fires are common in Alberta, and this is the latest in a series of fires that have occurred in the province in recent weeks. The dry and windy conditions make it easier for fires to spread quickly, which is why officials urge residents to be cautious and vigilant during fire season. The cause of the Entwistle fire is not yet known, but authorities are investigating.
This evacuation order serves as a reminder of the importance of having an emergency plan and being prepared for natural disasters. As the climate continues to change, extreme weather events like wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense. It’s crucial for individuals and communities to take steps to protect themselves and their homes from these risks.
