Miami (April 8, 2023).- The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) will hold its semi-annual meeting on April 25-27 amid a critical period for press freedom due to attacks against journalists and the urgency of identifying initiatives in favour of media sustainability.

The virtual meeting will be opened by IAPA President Michael Greenspon, global director of Licensing and Print Innovation at The New York Times, and the chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Carlos Jornet, managing editor of La Voz del Interior of Argentina. In addition, the IAPA’s 24 regional vice presidents will present reports on the state of freedom of expression and press freedom in each of their countries.
The April 25 presentations will be dedicated to analyzing press freedom, and two special sessions will be held. In one, several Nicaraguan journalists exiled by Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship will give their testimonies and challenges for the future. Then, Argentine jurist Eduardo Bertoni, from the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, will present the new Model Protocol for Intervention and Interaction of Security Forces with Journalists developed by Unesco.
Artificial Intelligence in journalism and new initiatives for media sustainability will also be topics to be discussed in depth in the program. In addition, U.S. analyst and editor Ken Doctor will speak on “Rebuilding Local News,” and a group of women editors from the region will participate in a panel discussion on the progress made in including women in leadership positions in the media.
The press freedom reports will be approved at the last session on April 27.
