Rogers has teamed up with SpaceX to bring satellite-to-phone coverage to Canadians all over the country, including the most remote regions. With this partnership, Rogers will become the first wireless company in Canada to provide satellite connectivity with the help of SpaceX’s Starlink low earth orbit satellites and Rogers’ national wireless spectrum.

The initial phase of the collaboration will involve offering satellite coverage for SMS text messages, with plans to expand into voice and data services in Canada’s national parks, remote wilderness areas, and rural highways that currently lack connectivity. The aim is to provide 4G and 5G connectivity in regions that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

Rogers President and CEO Tony Staffieri said that Rogers, as Canada’s biggest investor in 5G spectrum with the largest 5G network, is excited to collaborate with SpaceX to expand wireless coverage across Canada, including access to 911, in the future.

SpaceX co-lead for Direct to Cell Sara Spangelo said that as a Canadian, she is thrilled that SpaceX is partnering with Rogers to bring Starlink’s Direct to Cell service to Canadians, having a significant impact across the country for all kinds of activities.

Once commercially available, satellite-to-phone coverage will work with all 4G and 5G smartphones, according to Rogers. In the United States, SpaceX has already signed a deal with T-Mobile to offer similar service.
