Team Canada won twice on Monday at the 2023 Women’s World Curling Championship in Sandviken, Sweden. In their first game of the day, Canada trounced Italy 7-2, and then defeated Scotland 9-8 to improve to an overall record of four wins and one loss. The Canadian team is comprised of skip Kerri Einarson of Selkirk, Manitoba, third Val Sweeting of Redvers, Saskatchewan, second Shannon Birchard of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and lead Briane Harris of Winnipeg.
In Canada’s win over Italy’s Stefania Constantini, the game was even after the first five ends. Both teams scored two points. However, in the second half we saw Canadian dominance. After the Canadian squad took the 4-2 lead with the hammer after six ends, Canada had key steals of one point in the eighth and end, and two points in the ninth end. Italy had got off to a strong start at the World Championship as they beat Turkey 12-1 and South Korea 8-3 in their first two contests.
In Canada’s win over Scotland’s Rebecca Morrison, Canada jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first end only to see Scotland bounce back with four points in the second end. The Canadians stole points in the fourth, seventh, and eighth ends. On Tuesday, Canada will face Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni, the only team undefeated so far at five wins and zero losses.
