15-year-old Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva caused an upset at the Madrid Open on Wednesday by defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the first round. Ranked 194th in the world, Andreeva beat the 49th-ranked Fernandez in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4. The match lasted just over an hour, with Andreeva converting three out of five of her breakpoint opportunities, while Fernandez was only able to convert one out of six.
Despite struggling with her serve, Fernandez, who hails from Laval, Quebec, had high hopes coming into the tournament. However, she was unable to gain momentum and ended up falling to the young Russian player. Andreeva will now face Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.
Meanwhile, Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard, who won Tuesday’s qualifier against American Elizabeth Mandlik, was due to play Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in her opening-round match later on Wednesday.
