Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard suffered a defeat in the Round of 64 at the Madrid Open on Friday. Bouchard lost in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to Martina Trevisan of Italy, who’s ranked 20th in the WTA rankings. Despite converting all three of her break point opportunities, Bouchard was broken six times by her opponent. The 29-year-old had advanced to the Round of 64 by defeating Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine in the first round.
Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her doubles partner Luisa Stefani of Brazil won their Round of 32 match against Sofia Kenin of the United States and Magda Linette of Poland. Dabrowski and Stefani lost the first set but came back to win the next two, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
On the men’s side, Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario, defeated Colombian duo Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2).
In the women’s singles, Toronto’s Bianca Andreescu was set to play her first match of the tournament against China’s Wang Xiyu in the Round of 64 on Friday. Andreescu, who had been out of action since the Miami Open in late March due to a left ankle injury, was looking to make a strong comeback at the Madrid Open.
The Madrid Open is a clay-court tournament that serves as a warm-up event for the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis. The event features some of the top players in the world, and Canadians have been making their presence felt in both the singles and doubles competitions.
