The SIU is investigating the actions of Toronto police after 2 people fell from an apartment building.

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances that led to Toronto police officers breaking down the door to their unit on Friday, causing two people to fall from an apartment balcony.

In a news release Saturday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers from the Toronto police’s gun and gang task force, along with its Emergency Task Force (ETF), in a unit at a residential building in Liberty Village. Arrived to execute the warrant. 7th floor around 9:15 p.m

“Shortly after the ETF broke down the door to the unit, two men walked up to the balcony,” the SIU said.

A 31-year-old man landed on the fourth floor, and a 27-year-old man fell to the ground, the release said.

Both were rushed to hospital, where they are in the intensive care unit.

The unit said three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The SIU did not say how many officers are being investigated.

The SIU recently investigated a case where a man, 32, died after falling from an apartment window in Toronto last fall. In that case, the SIU concluded that there was “no reasonable basis” for a Toronto police officer to commit a criminal offense in connection with the Oct. 13 death.

It is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 34-year-old man who fell to his death from a balcony at a North York high-rise in Toronto on Christmas Day.

The SIU is called to investigate when people are killed or seriously injured in interactions with police officers in Ontario. It is asking anyone with information about the investigation, including video or photos, to contact lead investigators.
